ALL THE COLORS
Back in May of 2025 I had the pleasure of doing the florals for Jess & Matt’s wedding. The couple was really into the idea of having all the bright and funky colors of the rainbow, with the exception of red. You might think, “wow that allows for so much flexibility,” but having access to every single color can quickly turn into a very muddied arrangement. There are very important technical choices that need to be made, in order for it to not look like rainbow soup. We will get to those talking points soon, I promise!! Most importantly, when making color choices, I established early on what shades of red were off limits. Jess was really into the idea of moody burgundy shades, so long as they leaned purple, not red. To that I said, say no more!
The Art of Blending
As I alluded to earlier, having access to all of the colors can go from elegant to rainbow soup real quick. We went burgundy heavy on the personal florals, but maintained dimension with pops of more “spring forward” colors like light pinks and greens. However, the real star of the show was the tweedia.
Tweedia, oh tweedia, how I do not enjoy working with you and your sticky latex sap… BUT she really was the hero and was EXACTLY what the florals needed. It was the perfect shade of almost-teal blue. Blue is such a rare color in flowers to begin with but blending into the cooler-toned moody purples is what pulled the whole look away from red. The tweedia was what made the moody purples blend in such an effortless way with the bright pink and orange spring florals. I suppose the lesson here is “when in doubt, blend it out”? Although tweedia isn’t a preferred bloom for me, I can’t ignore color theory.
More on Color Theory
The almost-teal blue of Tweedia was the glue. In short– blue is the complimentary color of orange. Next to orange on the color wheel we have red and purple, these are called “analogous” colors. With Jess + Matt’s wedding, I practiced the square color theory which is when you pull 4 colors from the wheel that are equal distance from one another. Square color theory creates a well-balanced, yet vibrant color palette. We went with a square color palette of green, purpley-red, blue and orange, and because of color theory formulas AND floristry magic, it worked in SUCH a dreamy way.
Everything in the Details
When it came to Jess’s bridal bouquet, I had this vision that absolutely haunted me (which is of course just the life of an artist). I had such a specific reverie for the ribbon, since Jess wanted something longer than typical bridal bouquets and I chased my wild dream. It took legit HOURS to find the sparkly, crinkly ribbon of my dreams (and maybe nightmares? Just kidding, dreams for sure). Shoutout to Nicole over at Frances Loves Francis, she helped me confirm that said shiny, crinkly ribbon was something based in reality, and not something I had hallucinated. I’m so beyond grateful that I chased that vision because it just worked so perfectly. I love following a funky dream, whether it’s mine or yours, so never be afraid to bring a specific vision to the table. I will execute it to the best of my ability!
Let Them Eat (Floral) Cake
Let’s discuss cake flowers… They're a hot topic amongst florists! I personally LOVE making cake flowers! They’re absolutely gorgeous, and maybe I’m biased, but I love seeing flowers anywhere and everywhere. Most florists I know really don’t enjoy doing them, which is super valid, and I’ll explain why. Flowers can be toxic and even lethal. Foxglove, lily of the valley, delphinium, etc. are all flowers that can be fatal if ingested. With that being said, making sure that you have a very comprehensive knowledge on flowers is quintessential, in order to keep yourself and guests safe. Now that we’ve gotten the safety aspect covered, let’s discuss tips and tricks. Wedding cake flowers are very detailed– I cut each flower to have about ½-1” stem or no stem at all, I then wrap the stem with floral tape to seal in moisture, and that prevents that moisture from transferring into the cake. Then if needed I add a bit of wire to secure the bloom to the cake, almost like a faux stem.
I think why a lot of florists don’t love doing cake flowers is because it’s a one-shot, high-risk design. You’re essentially poking holes all over a wedding cake, and even so much as one flower dropping during the process can smear frosting everywhere. High risk, but also high reward! With Jess and Matt’s wedding, I was decorating the cake behind a curtain during their vow exchanges and I’m at weddings often, so I usually don’t cry anymore, but wow I was fighting back tears. I was able to weave their love into the decorating, as they were exchanging vows. I love this career so very much, I’m so honored to be a part of the best day of your life.
DISCO INFERNO
Another star of Jess and Matt’s wedding were the disco balls! The disco ball installation felt so funky and personable. Their wedding was really representative of their fun personalities, and that’s what a wedding should feel like! Weddings are not just a legal binding or photo ops, they’re an enmeshment of you and your spouse. They’re a representation of you as individuals, and the blending of your lives. The love and personality of this couple was so palpable. Another lovely addition to their wedding was a DJ who specializes in EDM! Jess and Matt love EDM, and this personal touch made for such a fun vibe.
Chase your funky wedding flowers dreams
The overarching theme of this blog post is to chase your wild(flower) dreams. My love for the nontraditional isn’t for everybody, but I didn’t start Berry Blooms so that I could be for everybody. I’m doing this for the folks with visions like Jess and Matt who don’t feel like traditional wedding flowers are for them. For the couples who love color, for the folks who don’t fit into what the wedding industrial complex tells us is a “proper” wedding. I’m for the nontraditional. Thank you for the trust with your big day, I’m forever grateful.
