Vineyards & White Florals
Mackenzie and Danny’s wedding! What a fun wedding this was, it pushed me outside of my normal style- color, color, color. I’ve been told by others that my color theory is my secret weapon… and with only white, composition and shape are critical elements. Although I don’t do it that often, I LOVE creating arrangements with all white florals. This means playing with texture and not worrying about colors potentially clashing with other facets of the event. Safe to say that we were able to achieve a great composition, while still making it feel like Berry Blooms Floral Co. signature work.
About The Couple
I know Mack and Danny from back in my PLNU days. As much as I love working with clients from all backgrounds, there’s something extra special about working with friends. Speaking of which, how rude of me to not introduce them! Danny is a big music guy so of course the wedding featured live music by their friends during the ceremony, a mariachi band during cocktail hour, AND an amazing DJ for the reception! And come on now, it would be a crime to not address Kenzie’s look, her curls in particular. She did her own wedding hair!!!! Hello?? As a fellow curly haired girlie, getting the curls effortlessly perfect on your wedding day is no small feat, and it was incredibly important that I made sure to call attention to this secret. No one can really know your curls better than you, so this is now something I always recommend to brides looking to feel like themselves on their big day!
Breaking Down the Floral Decisions
Mack gave me some excellent directions for the florals, aside from just saying “all white please!” She specifically requested snapdragons— as they were important to her grandmother, which I absolutely adore. “Snaps” (as florists like to call them) add such wonderful height and a very unique composition to floral arrangements. Mack also specifically requested a garden style/feel, but without standard roses. This key detail led me to primarily use white dahlias and lisianthus for a similar focal size. I also went for some Agrostema and delphinium to really nail the whimsical and organic feel of garden style. Because of these choices, the florals felt right at home at the venue, like they’ve always been there.
Notes on Ceremony Flips
Let’s establish an understanding of what “flipping” is. When a florist or other wedding vendor says “flipping” it means that the vendor will take an aspect of the ceremony, and bring it to the cocktail hour or reception. Clients tend to refer to this as repurposing florals, and in our opinion, the right kind of repurposing can get you the most bang for your buck! When it came to MacKenzie and Danny, they had big floral arrangements on pedestals, and we moved them in front of the sweetheart table. This created a completely unique look that to guests looked like a whole other floral installation. When I’m working with couples on designing their dream day, I like for them to consider ceremony florals with the intention of flipping. Arches are quite beautiful for ceremonies, but have no practical application outside of the ceremony. They’re typically hundreds of pounds, and they don’t look natural in the same way that floral arrangements placed in front of a sweetheart table looks. Mack and Danny’s ceremony florals blended so beautifully into the backdrop of the vineyard, adding such a whimsical, yet chic appearance. If you’re concerned about budget and want your whole event to look as luxurious as possible– ask your florists about designing ceremony florals with the intention of flipping!
Modern and Chic Bridesmaid Bouquets
Something that we’ve been noticing in floral trends over the past couple of years are single ingredient bridesmaid bouquets. How exactly does this work? Instead of giving the bridesmaids tinier versions of the bridal bouquet, florists will pull individual ingredients from the bridal bouquet and create single ingredient bridesmaid bouquets. For example: with Mack’s bouquet, she had Lisianthus, Dahlias, Chamomile, Campanula, Agrostema (Sweet Peas), Explosion Grass, Snapdragons, etc. She had 5 bridesmaids: one got only Dahlias, another got Sweet Peas, someone else got Snapdragons… you get the gist. I personally love this monobloom look and think it is oh so chic + modern. It’s typically more affordable than creating multi-ingredient bouquets, especially if you have lots of bridesmaids. Also- how fun is it to make your loved ones feel a little bit special and unique? All your people’s bouquets come together to make up yours in a highly personable way!
Custom Mudd House Vases
A while back I commissioned compote arrangement vases from the lovely folks over at Mudd House in Encinitas, CA. Shoutout to my dear friend Annie aka Wilow.co who works there! This was my first time getting to use the compotes for an event, and it was magical. There’s something deeply special about knowing the folks who created art for you, who’s literal fingerprints are in the pieces. I can’t say this enough, but support local businesses and artists as much as possible. Not only does your dollar stretch so much further when you are keeping your money within your local economy, but you’re directly feeding, clothing and housing your neighbors. You’re helping someone live and breathe their dreams- not just lining the pockets of greedy billionaires. I’m such a big fan of Mudd House, not only for the incredible art that is made in their four walls, but also because of the community that is created within the space. They’re truly amazing– go give their class schedule a look!
It’s a Nice Day for a White Wedding
Thank you Mack and Danny, it was truly such an honor to contribute to your dream day! Doing all white florals is not super common for me, but man do I love it. Don’t let my colorful social feeds and website scare you away, I promise that I can make your white florals dream day a reality. All white really lets me highlight my understanding of texture and composition, not just color theory.
